“I don’t exactly know what I mean by that, but I mean it.” – J. D. Salinger

As a tribute to J.D. Salinger and the book that had so much impact on many a High Schooler’s lives (The Catcher In The Rye), I want to post a few tracks from bands that I’ve recently discovered from his home town… New York City. Salinger was born on January 1, 1919 in “the City” (Manhattan). I hope you all enjoy the tunes and a big “Thank You” goes out to Mr. Salinger. RIP.

MP3s are below text

1) BEACH FOSSILS “Youth” and “Wide Awake” I figured these two tracks are pretty fitting with today’s theme. Beach Fossils is a 4-piece from my favorite borough, Brooklyn. They play my revered type of jangly lo-fi rock that’s reminiscent of what Lou Reed and his garage-y predecessors like The Seeds, Love, Syndicate of Sound, etc. Check out their DAYDREAM EP on Captured Tracks out 2/9/10. They will be at this year’s SXSW, so check ’em out!

2) THE BEETS “For You” and “I Wish I Knew How My Life Should Be” This Jackson Heights trio (not to be confused with the other “Beets” from the cartoon show, Doug) will be touring with Beach Fossils and San Diegans Christmas Island. More lo-fi garage-y vibes. These guys will also be at SXSW this year.

3) SUNDELLES “Dead Youth” Dirty, fuzzed out rock’n’roll! I had the pleasure of seeing these guys perform with the then Muslims-now-Soft Pack dudes awhile back. Loved ’em.

4) SISTERS “Highway Scratch” Quite the dynamic duo, these guys make a lot of noise for just being two dudes. Reminds me a bit of Japandroids but maybe a little poppier. And guess what??? They’ll be at SXSW too! 😉

5) SHARK? “Big Wheels (It’s Alright)” I love the flow of this song. Upbeat, acoustic and a bit dirty. Love it! Oh, and… YES they will be at SXSW. haha
